Job responsibilities
The Packaging Development Engineer will be a key member of Bonduelle Fresh America, responsible for the development and optimization of all packaging materials. This will include developing innovative packaging formats, in conjunction with the sales and marketing teams, from concept through implementation, optimization of existing packaging materials to drive value, and developing and implementing consistent processes and management of packaging material revisions.

The individual in this role will be required to effectively interface cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, R&D, Engineering, Operations, Finance, Procurement, etc., as well as with customer and packaging material and equipment vendors.
It will be necessary to partner with packaging materials vendors to understand their capabilities, challenge their processes for improvement and leverage their capabilities to deliver continuous improvement and innovative solutions.
Specific packaging initiatives may include:
- New packaging development to support new product launches.
- Identifying and implementing packaging cost savings projects.
- Working closely with Project teams and external suppliers to delivery projects on time.
- Working closely with R&D product development and operations to develop and test new packaging.
- Addressing Packaging Quality issues and determining root causes and corrective actions.
- Sustainability strategy related to Packaging (reducing material, using recycled materials, etc.).
This role will oversee packaging projects in multiple plants across the country and will require up to 25% travel, once it is safe to travel. For the most part, you will work from home, coming into the plant as needed.

Desired qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in Packaging Science / Engineering or another relevant technical discipline. Quick question for you - click here
- 3 to 5 years of packaging development experience in a consumer packaged goods (CPG) environment, ideally the food industry.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- The ability to work independently on multiple packaging projects and ensure successful completion.
- The ability to develop strong knowledge in:
- Primary packaging and packaging processes as it relates to fresh produce packaging (oxygen barrier films, thermoformed plastic trays, lidding film).
- Secondary packaging and display packaging (corrugate box / tray designs, club store packaging).
- Experience with the following is a plus:
- Working with cross-functional project teams to deliver new packaging and products.
- Working with operations teams in conducting line trials and testing.
- Project management and leading cost savings initiatives.
- Packaging distribution testing, pallet pattern design and optimization (TOPS / CAPE software).
- Packaging equipment.
- Working with Marketing and Graphic Design companies to translate technical drawings and graphics requirements.
- Solid problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.
